Cal echoes Jones as rebounder, but …
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Kentucky Coach John Calipari echoed Terrence Jones’ sentiment that rebounding, not scoring, be the objective.
“The greatest thing about rebounding is you can be as selfish as you want to be,” Calipari said.
That said, the UK coached added that the team will welcome scoring from Jones.
“Get 15 (points), some games 20,” Calipari said. “. . . (Jones must) play harder and rough. Come up with loose balls.”
Jones: Emphasis is rebounding, not scoring
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
All-American candidate Terrence Jones said Friday that his emphasis is on rebounding, not scoring as Kentucky begins SEC play.
Noting that his dislocated finger is not yet 100 percent and got hit in recent games, Jones said, “I just know I wanted to rebound because that’s what my coach wants.”
Jones dismissed any concern about scoring. His scoring average has dropped from 15.7 points as a freshman to 11.2 as a sophomore.
“This team is all about winning,” he said. “We don’t care who gets the points.”
Cal: UK does not need to win every game
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Echoing a theme of past seasons, Kentucky Coach John Calipari said Friday that his team does not need to feel the need to win every game.
“One of my messages is we don’t have to win every game,” he said. “Let’s just get better.”
Calipari seemed to suggest that UK players felt more relief than joy in beating UALR on Tuesday.
Cal: Kidd-Gilchrist is ‘fine’
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist practiced on Thursday, suggesting he will play against South Carolina, UK Coach John Calipari said Friday.
Calipari said Kidd-Gilchrist was “fine.”
UK withdrew Kidd-Gilchrist from portions of Tuesday’s game against UALR because of a chest injury. After that game, Calipari suggested it might be a pulled muscle.
On Friday, Calipari did not specify the injury Kidd-Gilchrist sustained.
Cal acknowledges better play at times with Teague out
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Kentucky Coach John Calipari downplayed his post-game observation Tuesday that his team played better against UALR with starting point guard Marquis Teague on the bench.
The video showed that a mini flurry of three-pointers (three in less than four minutes) had a lot to do with second-half breakout, he said.
But, Calipari acknowledged that there’s a reason the Cats can be more productive offensively when Teague sits.
With Doron Lamb at point guard, opponents have “one more guy to guard” on the perimeter, the UK coach said. “It opens up the lane.”
Teague was o-for-five from three-point range in the last two games, one for eight in the last three and six for 30 in the last 12 games.
Jones: Rebounding is aim despite finger injury
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Terrence Jones said Friday that his dislocated finger gets hit during games.Just part of playing basketball, he said.
“I just know I wanted to rebound,” he said of recent games, “because that’s my coach wants.”
UK Coach John Calipari confirmed that rebounding should be Jones’ aim.
“The greatest thing about rebounding is you can be as selfish as you want to be,” he said.
UK still wants points from Jones, Calipari said.
Jones: SEC brings greater challenge
January 6th, 2012 — Uncategorized
Terrence Jones saw the beginning of SEC player as a new, heightened challenge for Kentucky.
“Real competitive teams,” he said Friday. “It’s going to be a lot tougher than pre-season teams just because every team knows how we run our offense.”
Kentucky opens SEC play Saturday against visiting South Carolina.
At No. 2, Kentucky is the highest-ranked SEC team. Only Florida (No. 13) and Mississippi State (No. 15) are also ranked.
“Records don’t matter,” Jones said. “You just have to bring it.”
