Georgia’s bright side: the paint

Georgia had not outscored a SEC opponent in the paint until getting a 26-24 advantage on Kentucky.
Not that UK got overpowered. The Cas won the rebounding battle 41-26.
Georgia, which came into the game ranked No. 308 nationally in shooting accuracy, made only 34.5 percent of its shots. That marked a low for a UK opponent in league play.

Miller, Cal note selfless attitude of Cats

After equaling a season-high 19 points at Georgia Tuesday night, Darius Miller acknowledged that he felt a need to score.
Four of UK’s five leading scorers shot a combined six of 22 and scored 18 points in the game.
“Yeah, I know there’s times I have to step up,” Miller said. “Other guys feel the same way. We all understand that. We’re all happy with that.”
Coach John Calipari noted that seven UK players had taken between 103 and 196 shots. He said that usually one or two players have many more shot attempts than their teammates.
“That means we have an unselfish team that will pass to each other,” he said.

Davis protested Lamb haircut

Kentucky guard Doron Lamb sported a new closely-cropped haircut in the game at Georgia Tuesday night.
Teammate Anthony Davis said he accompanied Lamb to the barber shop and tried to talk him out of cutting his locks.
“I said, ‘Don’t do it, Doron,’” Davis said.
And as the barber cut into Lamb’s bushy hair, “I started screaming, Nooooo!” Davis said.
Lamb had said in the pre-season he would let his hair grow long. He said he didn’t have time for a haircut.
So why did Lamb get a haircut?
“He said he was getting tired of it,” Davis said.

Alabama ranks among best defenses

The latest NCAA defensive statistics support Kentucky Coach John Calipari’s contention that Alabama presents a challenge.
In NCAA stats through last weekend, Alabama ranked in the nation’s top 10 in three key defensive categories:
– No. 7 in field goal defense (opponents shooting 36.8 percent).
– No. 2 in three-point defense (opponents shooting 25.7 percent).
– No. 8 in points allowed (opponents averaging 55.7 points).
UK plays Alabama on Saturday.

Cal expects a return to grind-it bball vs. Alabama

While Arkansas intended to wear down UK with an uptempo style, Coach John Calipari expects the next opponent to resume the conventional wisdom:
Try to force the Cats to play a possession-by-possession game in the half-court.
Try to make it a slugfest.
Kentucky plays Alabama Saturday.
“It’s going to be a war,” Calipari said.

Cal extends Davis-Camby comparison to career lengths

When comparing Anthony Davis to former All-American Marcus Camby, UK Coach John Calipari made an arched comment.
“Maybe I can coach Anthony three years like I did Marcus,” Calipari said. “That would be a lot of fun, too. I’m going to try to influence him that way.”
When asked his reaction, Davis said he was concentrating on playing this season.
Davis is generally considered a lottery pick, perhaps the overall No. 1 pick, in the 2012 NBA draft.

Kidd-Gilchrist commits two early fouls

Kentucky overwhelmed Arkansas despite a relatively small contribution from sparkplug Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Two early fouls (the second at the 15:58 mark of the first half) helped limit him to 10 points and four rebounds. His 24 minutes marked his third-shortest playing stint of the season.
“I looked at Michael Gilchrist and said, ‘You’ve got to play smarter and you cannot be fouling,’” UK Coach John Calipari said.

Jones attributes more production to less thinking

Terrence Jones continued his personal renaissance with 13 points and nine rebounds against Arkansas.
That gave him 55 points in the last four games. In that span, he’s made 21 of 36 shots.
“I’m just not thinking as much,” he said. “. . . Just being less conscious about my hand. Not worrying about messing up because I’m not playing (well). . . . Having fun.”
