On the eve of a game against No. 6 Louisville, Kentucky Coach John Calipari acknowledged that the chances for his team to make a statement nationally are dwindling.
UK, which is 0-3 against ranked teams this season, plays Louisville Saturday in Rupp Arena.
“How many (more) opportunities for a game like this?” Calipari told reporters on Friday. “We just don’t have that many opportunities.”
Judging by this week’s Associated Press top 25 poll, Louisville is UK’s last top 10 opponent. The Southeastern Conference promises only two ranked opponents, one in the shaky position of No. 25 (Missouri). Florida is ranked No. 13.
Players Alex Poythress and Dominique Hawkins spoke of the chance the Louisville game affords for Kentucky to prove its a contender.
Calipari said it was “too early to start talking” about NCAA Tournament resume’. But he welcomed the news that his players spoke of the proverbial chip on shoulder and wanting to prove something.
