UK falls shy of volleyball record attendance

Earlier in the Madness program, UK beat Mississippi State in volleyball. The straight-set victory (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) worked against UK’s hoipe of setting a school and/or national attendance record by piggybacking off Madness’s full house.
The match was over more than an hour before Madness began, surely a factor in the announced attendance of 5,261.
“I tried to call as many timeouts as I could,” UK Coach Craig Skinner quipped.
The announced crowd marked a high in Skinner’s tenure as coach (previous high 4,022 in 2011), but was well shy of the school record (9,475 in 1993) and national record (17,430 in the 2008 Final Four).
Saying he did not expect those records to fall, Skinner added, “What I wanted to see was to get some people exposed to a high-level sport.”
