UK luncheon delivers mixed message to U to L

Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones served as master of ceremonies at the UK Tip-Off Luncheon on Wednesday. That marked his third straight year directing traffic.
Jones noted that his jokes at the expense of Louisville Coach Rick Pitino the last two years led to a request not to mine that territory again.
He could not resist saying that the U of L coach need not be mentioned at a luncheon serving to laud someone who “recently won a national championship and sent several players to the NBA.”
Later, Jones mentioned that UK women’s coach Matthew Mitchell recently bought Pitino’s former home.
“Make sure you switch out the dining room table,” Jones said to Mitchell from the podium. That was a reference to Pitino’s well-documented legal problems of a few years ago.
Jokingly saying this might be his last year as MC, Jones said, “I’m going down swinging.”
Later, UK Coach John Calipari tried to set a more welcoming tone toward U of L. He said the Cardinals were highly ranked “and deserve it.”
Calipari saluted Pitino as a “great coach.” He also said UK held “no disrespect” toward U of L.
