While hardy a neutral observer as Lexington leaders explore building a new downtown arena or renovating Rupp Arena, University of Kentucky Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart said Monday he would put UK basketball’s needs ahead of any other consideration.
“My job is to protect University of Kentucky basketball and make sure it has what it needs to be the flagship of college basketball,” he said.

Jerry Tipton of the Lexington Herald- Leader has covered Kentucky basketball since the 1981-82 season. That time includes five coaches, five Final Fours, four athletic directors, two interim athletic directors and many memories. Before coming to Lexington, Tipton worked eight years for the Huntington (W.Va.) Herald-Dispatch. He covered Marshall’s basketball team for two seasons before coming to the Herald-Leader.

He certainly didn’t show a great deal of concern for basketball when he hired Billy and allowed him to work without a contract. What he did was cost the program two years of accomplishment and well over three million dollars.
