Cal: work on UK’s ‘psyche’ supercedes subs’ playing time

Although UK enjoyed a rare lopsided victory on Saturday, Coach John Calipari did not play the players on the end of the bench much against South Carolina.

He explained why not on the SEC coaches’ teleconference on Monday.

“We’ve got to get better as a team,” he said. “If we’re playing six of seven guys, then those six or seven have to get better. That’s the first thing on my mind.”

Calipari later said he would have played the rest of the players more if South Carolina had not continued to press. UK’s regulars struggled against the full-court pressure.

Calipari said he didn’t want to be forced into a position of having to re-insert starters.

“I’m working on (team) psyche now, too,” he said.

Hood and Poole should transfer…. if they are not playing in these types of games, what makes them think they’ll play next year when the next ONE’n’DONEs come in? Forget UK EVER having a KY Mr. Basketball on their team. Won’t happen unless they are a top 5 prospect…. Looks like LOUISVILLE is the place for our in-state players to play… too bad… miss those guys… Oh, well, we just have to get used to the ONE’n’DONES who play for the name on the back of their jersey and not the one on the front. Too bad.

This isn’t your son’s 10 year old rec league, this is the highest level of the NCAA. If you’re good enough, you play. And I can guarantee the Louisville fan above that if Ricky P. were in charge of this team, he’d have done the exact same thing Cal did. Cal is judged and has a job based on getting UK to March Madness and going Final Four deep, and he knows it.

As for all this negative talk about one and dones, there isn’t a coach in America that wouldn’t love to have Jone or Knight or Lacey or Davis or Gilchrist and on and on and on. And if you think I’m wrong, ask yourself why Coach Roy, and Coach K and Bill Self AND Pitino, are competing for these same players. Don’t kid yourself.

I think that is great. We need to get ready for the tourney. We had a coach that tried to make bad players good, it is great to see we have a coach who wants to make good players great!

Well DoubleJ, what guys do you “miss”? Miller is a Ky. Mr. Basketball. Who are you missing? What…you want to play guys who can’t compete at this level because they are from Ky? You think Hood and Poole diserve significant playing time? You think Cal won’t go after guys from Ky. who he believes can compete effectively? You think Cal should not recruit the best he can to come to Kentucky and play? Come on dude, what do you want? Do you long for the days of Clyde???…Tubby??? No one-and-dones to worry about there!

There are always those who are second guessing the
coach. They are never satisfied with the coach they have. I wish they would all go to coaching school and get their own team.
Let Cal coach the way he feels best. If he were not getting the one and dones some other school would and these same people would be complaining because Cal wasn’t getting the best.
