NCAA grants Kanter waiver to practice limit

Not only is Enes Kanter’s eligibility to play for Kentucky this coming season in doubt. So is his ability to continue practicing with team.
The NCAA places a 45-day limit on how much a player with unresolved eligibility issues can practice with the team. But in Kanter’s case, the NCAA has granted him a waiver to continue practicing while the NCAA’s Eligibility Center and UK review his case.
Because UK began practicing for its exhibition series in Canada on Aug. 1, Kanter’s 45-day window expired this week. The NCAA grants waivers to the 45-day limit.
UK spokesman DeWayne Peevy confirmed on Wednesday that Kanter would continue to practice.
“Any student-athlete that is awaiting certification is reviewed periodically for practice eligibility,” Peevy said in a statement. “Enes Kanter is currently eligible to practice.”
NCAA Bylaw 12.1.1.1.3.1 on temporary certification states: If a prospective student-athlete reports for athletics participation before the student’s amateur status has been certified, the student may practice, but not compete, for a maximum period of 45 days. After this period, the student shall have his or her amateur status certified to continue to practice or to compete.
Kanter’s eligibility for this coming season has not been resolved.  He has met the academic standards for eligibility. However, his amateur status remains in doubt because he played for a professional team in his native Turkey.
Accoridng to a story in The New York Times earlier this summer, Kanter receive between $100,000 and $150,000 in benefits for playing for the Istanbul-based team Fenerbahce Ulker.

As an average “JOE”, I find it hard to understand the dislike (hatred) people can have for someone. John Calapari is someone I believe who is truely concerned about the kids he coaches. We may not agree about his comments about having 5 players from the same school get drafted being the biggest thing that has happened at the University of Kentucky, but shows where his heart is! I too get tired of the negative comments read in the national news and all over the internet. These things make me second guess whether it’s all worth it. I wouldn,t consider myself a die hard Big Blue Fan, but I do cause my wife to get upset when I take over the TV when basketball and football seasons start ;-) . To me, those who (Thamel) cause the issues to rise over a players eligibility, when found to be wrong, should face some type of fine or penelty.
