3 double-doubles a first since 1977

Besides beating Mississippi State Tuesday, Kentucky did something that hasn’t happened with UK basketball since 1977.

Not in 33 years had three UK players had double-doubles in the same game. That happened on Nov. 26, 1977, according to UK.

The double-doubles against Mississippi State belonged to DeMarcus Cousins (19 points, 14 rebounds), Patrick Patterson (19 points, 10 rebounds) and John Wall (18 points, 10 rebounds).

In that 1977 game, the UK double-doubles were posted by four Wildcats: Jack Givens, Kyle Macy, Rick Robey and Mike Phillips.

i have seen every game this year . s. c. has one of the best players in the country, but missippi state is the best team we have played.they can shoot the three and have size inside. best player did not play. no depth inside. it took three players double double to beat them very good team.

Great performances, both. The question is which team would have won going head to head. At this point I would pick the 77-78 NCAA champs. The primary reason is experience. A good example is zone offense. This year’s team is still having trouble with zones, the 77-78 team humiliated Duke’s zone in the championship game. If this year’s Cats could stay together another year they could possibly be the best team ever in the NCAA.
