SEC names Downey Player of Week

The Southeastern Conference named South Carolina guard Devan Downey its Player of the Week for last week.
Surprisingly, Monday’s announcement marked the first time Downey had been named the SEC’s Player of the Week. Surprising because Downey is averaging more than 30 points a game in league play.
For the week, Downey averaged 31.5 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in leading the Gamecocks to wins over No. 1 Kentucky and Georgia.
Downey had 30 points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in leading South Carolina against Kentucky. That marked the program’s first victory over a No. 1 team.
He added 33 points, three assists and two steals in the victory over Georgia.
The SEC named Marshawn Powell of Arkansas its Freshman of the Week.
