No decision expected soon for busy Meeks

Kentucky guard Jodie Meeks does not figure to make a decision on his basketball future before June.

His father said Monday that Meeks has a busy workout schedule that figures to run well past the NBA’s Chicago Combine, which will be held on May 28-29.

College players have until June 15 to withdraw their names from consideration for the June 25 NBA Draft.

Meeks, who led Kentucky in scoring this past season, must decision whether to return for his senior season or remain in this year’s draft. He was among the nation’s top five scorers.

The Daily Oklahoman reported last week that Meeks was among six players working out for the Oklahoma City Thunder last weekend. The workout group included three other perimeter players: Dar Tucker of De Paul, Danny Green of North Carolina and Antonio Anderson of Memphis.

The Thunder also plan future workouts for such shooters as Robert Vaden of UAB and Josh Shipp of UCLA, the Oklahoma City daily newspaper said.

Meeks wouldn’t be the first cat to surprise his college coach and be a better pro player. Don’t rule him out of the first round yet. BG may not have been playing him in his best NBA role. I hope to see you back Jodie, but understand the lure of the NBA.

love tipton’s notes…meeks should be back – he has to know it will only help him. i do worry about his workouts. he has such upside in my opinion that i am afraid his stock will only rise with the workouts. and jerry, please proofread.

So one thing we haven’t seen is what impact if any Joe Crawford’s experience is having on Jodi Meeks. Do you think the lack of commentary is telling a story or no?

Big problem: Jodie won’t score 25 points a game next season. Maybe he should stay in the draft?

UK can only play so many players at once. I feel Meeks is gone if John Wall is coming, which I hope isn’t true. Heis not welcomed here.

Dont feel Meeks is gone if John Wall comes. I also think Jodie does need to come back if he is projected into the second round. That guarantees basically nothing in the NBA. Jodie can use another year to improve.

Uhh… Meeks and Wall play different positions, so the two are not in conflict. Wall passes to Meeks. Meeks scores. Meeks returning has no effect on Wall’s PT or vice versa.

One more year at UK and Meek’s NBA paycheck increases by about 75%… No brainer

You win championships with 10 or more players. When you can substitute at will and not give up anything on defensive, scoring, or rebounding you have a great chance to bring home the gold. I definately believe there is a starting spot for jodie if he wants it and our chances of hanging another banner definately go up if he returns.

I just hope there’s enough basketball’s next year. People are getting all excited and they haven’t played a game yet. How do we know there will be chemistry? If UK doesn’t win it next year I’m sure there will be fans jumping off bridges. There is no way they will live up to the crazy expectations. I see Calipari is trying to tone it down already by telling fans to curb their expectations just to cover himself. Too late, you accepted the UK job now get ready to deal with the crazy expectations!

Just a preface: I’m not being selfish here.
Meeks shouldn’t go pro yet. He’s a quality catch and shoot player…even a great one. He’s worked REALLY hard on his jumper, but he’s not ready. He needs to work n his passing and his handle for another year thanks to the year he lost to injury. He’s already fast, smar, and atletic, but If he can add improved handles to his game, he’d be a sure fire lottery pick.
P.S. – A buddy of mine went to HS with Jodie, and is close friends with his best friend. He says he thinks that Jodie will be back. (Disclamer: he hasn’t personally spoken to Jodie lately, as the young Mr. Meeks won’t risk injury playing pick up games back in Norcross.)

But you also need chemistry among those 9 – 10 players in order for them to all be effective. I agree that both Meeks and UK would be better off if he comes back. But it’s not a lock that we hang a banner or even make the Final Four.
