Henry cancels UK visit, ’100 percent’ for Kansas

Highly-regarded wing prospect Xavier Henry will not visit Kentucky this weekend, his father said Wednesday morning.

A decision could come at any time. The smart money is on Kansas, the alma mater of his parents and where his mother, Barbara, wants the player to attend.

“If I was a betting man, I’d bet 100 percent my kids will go to Kansas,” Carl Henry said.

When it was noted that 100 percent was a big number, the elder Henry laughed and said, “That’s almost, well, actually, that’s putting them right at KU without them saying it.”

Then, Carl Henry added, “It could be a shocker.”

The official announcement is expected on Thursday, the newspaper in Oklahoma City, Okla., The Oklahoman, reported on Wednesday. The newspaper quoted sources as saying Kansas is the choice.

The Henrys live in Oklahoma City, Okla. Xavier and older brother C.J. Henry are looking to attend the same school, another desire of their mother’s. C.J. sat out last season as a walk-on at Memphis. Xavier had signed with Memphis, then re-opened the recruiting process when John Calipari left the school for Kentucky.

Carl Henry said he was neutral in his sons’ decision. His wife likes Kansas, in part, because she and her family would have an easier trip to Lawrence, Kan., than Lexington for games, he said.

“To me, they don’t want to buck the system,” Carl Henry said of his sons. “There is no way they want to see their mother unhappy.”

Calapari needs recruit Bledsoe, Dennis very, very hard,I believe Xavier and Wall more interested in other schools.

Oh, for the love of sam!!!!!! Let this thing end! It’s a shame two kids can hijack three programs like this. UK will ROCK without these prima donnas!

You gotta be kidding about going to Lawrence instead of Lexington, we will hang # 8 in the rafters and they will be stuck in po dunk watching on CBS, yeah baby as our boy Vital would say. You had an opportunity to play at Kentucky or maybe the competion was too much for them.

#5 Dave on 04.22.09 at 12:21 pm

Yeah Lawrence, the birth place of college basketball.

#6 prairie_rattler on 04.22.09 at 12:26 pm

Ummm… po dunk Rupp was a Kansas boy… hell, Calipari was at KU before he was at UK… and as happy as you are with Cal (for now), wouldn’t you have rather had Self? I think so… but he’s got the best job in college basketball and wouldn’t have given UK a thought.
KU is picked #1 next year (almost unanimously) even w/o the Henry boys or Stephenson… UNC will catch (and pass UK first) and KU won’t be far behind.

Chuck, IF UK makes it to the FF next year, we will likely play Kansas. Seriously, they are loaded and just won a National Championship by beating Coach Cal. I don’t like X going to KU, but jeesh, get real. It is not a bad basketball choice.

#8 KUfanatic93 on 04.22.09 at 12:36 pm

Chuck, you can’t be serious right? KU is the preseason #1 team in the nation. There will be more national coverage, big monday’s, college gamedays ect than at anywhere else. Obviously, the roster is loaded given the ranking. Why would you think that indicates that they fear competition?

#9 Stew on 04.22.09 at 12:40 pm

chuck is clearly in denial. Someone in Kentucky referring to anywhere else as “po dunk”? And, as for “#8″, he apparently hasn’t been paying much attention for the past decade…

#10 Lance on 04.22.09 at 1:04 pm

LOL @ Chuck.

#11 Dan on 04.22.09 at 1:14 pm

Yeah, cause there is no competition at Kansas. They only return every major contributor from a team that went to the sweet 16 plus have a top ten recruiting class without the possibility of the Henry clan joining. That must’ve been it, the competition!!

What are you smoking Chuck? Competition, are you kidding? The SEC sucked last year ( check out the NCCA tourney) and won’t be much better next season. Heck, Baylor, the fifth place B12 team last season would have won the SEC title.
P.S. How long will it be before the Wildcat faithful run Calipari off as they did Tubby and Billy Clyde?

hey . . . look at me — the 3rd comment. pure comedy according to 3ballboschee.

UK will hang another banner before KU?!! KU is ranked preseason #1 by everyone, with or without Xavier. Seems like he’d be dumb not to go there, Rock Chalk.

#15 Tony on 04.22.09 at 1:41 pm

So – it’s easy to get from Oka. City to Memphis??? Sounds likes it might be better off for EVERYONE if they head to KU. Good luck fellows.

#16 Mark on 04.22.09 at 1:49 pm

X wears 13 Chuck. Vitale, not Vital and what the heck is competion? Did you mean competition?

You just answered the reason X is not going to Lexington. Competition in the SEC? The same SEC that got 1 school in this year’s tournament? Or the same Big 12 that had 3 teams in the Sweet 16 and 2 in the Elite 8.

#17 JAYHAWK10 on 04.22.09 at 3:38 pm

UK won’t hang another banner anytime soon. All Kentucky can do now is sit back while today’s relevant teams continue to get the best recruits and move closer and closer to overtaking UK on the all-time wins list.

Henry to Kansas to serve his Mother’s convenience of watching him play assumes he can develop his game more and improve his NBA stock more under Self than Calipari. Is he or his Dad really looking at the big picture – are all those millions he’ll sacrifice worth his Mom’s convenience of watching him play in Lawrence vs Rupp in Lexington! I guess we’ll soon find out if he’s serious about improving his game and improving his NBA stock – Calipari, his system, competition and exposure spells Kentucky!

#19 Jayhawk16 on 04.22.09 at 4:48 pm

Remind me where Kentucky was in March? In the NIT? And how did that pan out?

#20 Joe on 04.22.09 at 4:56 pm

I hate to say this but Kentucky has been a shadow of its former self lately and we all know it. Given that Xavier is 1 and done this looks like a smart decision and he\’ll have a better shot at winning at KU next year instead of UK. Brighter days are certainly ahead though w/ Cal at the helm. This would have really helped but it won\’t be long before we are back at the top.

I have difficulty understanding why they would be willing to go to Memphis to play for Calipari, but aren’t willing to come to KY to play for Calipari. However, I see who wears the pants in that family. All the “they are coming – they aren’t coming – they are coming makes me think Ky is better off without them.

#22 MemphisMan on 04.22.09 at 6:10 pm

Cal, if you are reading this, we are very happy that X is apparently deciding to go to Kansas! Oh, and we are still waiting to be reimbursed for school monies used to recruit Nolan Dennis and DeMarcus Cousins.

As a Big Blue fan, I’m disappointed, but UK has a ton of great talent coming in. I’m reminded of what Rick Pitino said after loosing to Arizona in the 1997 NCAA Championship game, “To the victors go the spoils”. Congrats, Kansas. I’m looking forward to playing you over the next ten years, though ;)

#24 Dustin W. Cordell on 04.22.09 at 6:29 pm

im glad he is going to KU my-self, if that is really the case bc if he dont want to be at UK then we dont need or want him bc that would just cause problems. The preseason favorite rarely wins it all. yea i know NC done it this year but it is rare. Go cats and go Coach Cal. Go get Bledsoe and Dennis!!!!

#25 Corey on 04.22.09 at 7:23 pm

MemphisMan your comment is uncalled for. Coaches change jobs all the time. Get over it.

Memphis will be fine.

As for Xavier going to Kansas, how can you fault a kid who was obviously torn between which school to attend but ultimately decides to fulfill his mothers wishes. Good show on his part.

Kansas is a great school and great program and they are in fact, pre-season favorites to win it all.

I’m a UK fan and am happy with what the future holds for us. KY is on it’s way back. We’ll have our chance, which is all we want. To remain a Blue Blood in college BB.

GO CATS!!!!!!

#26 MemfoManiac on 04.22.09 at 8:32 pm

Memphis will probably hang #1 before UK hangs #8. Don’t think so much of yourself. If you try to climb to the top without a net, it’s gonna really hurt when you fall. Cousins huh? Bet money he won’t be playing this year, ends up JUCO or Europe. Up 9 with 2 mins to go, coach tanks it. Wonder were he’s at now?

#27 Brent Westmoreland on 04.22.09 at 8:48 pm

We need a guard badly..we have two excellent centers in Orton and Cousins. The missing piece of the puzzle is a point guard. Wall would be great even for one year! Bledsoe needs to be recruited hard and get his interest away from Florida and over to Kentucky.

Competition ? Ur in the basketball challenged SEC . If it werent 4 the Gators success , ur conference wouldnt ever b on tv.
