Mega point guard prospect John Wall told USA Today that he is not considering entering this year’s NBA draft.
This relevation says something about what passes for “news” these days. In the — pardon the expression — good old days, a reporter had to nail down a story before printing it or, presumably, broadcasting it.
Now you go with could be or might be, then later clean up the mess. So you have two “stories.”
So when someone “reported” that Wall might enter the NBA draft, it came as news to Wall.
That aside, sportswriter Tim Stevens of the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer wrote on his blog about the situation.
Here’s an edited portion:
Wall said Wednesday that he never planned to file paperwork with the NBA this year.
“I was kind of shocked,” he said of ESPN reports that he was contemplating entering the draft.
“I’ve never considered it, never thought about it. You don’t have to worry about me not going to college. I promised my mom and my dad, before he died, that I wouldn’t go from high school to the NBA.”
Wall is in New York for the Jordan Brand Classic All-American Game and could not be reached for comment.
Wall is believed to be seriously considering scholarship offers from Kentucky, Duke, Baylor, Memphis, Miami (Fla.), Kansas, N. C. State and Florida.

Everyone, CJ Henry, something I think most are not thinking about, he could easily be “our starting point guard next season”!
He has experience in the dribble drive system, he knows it! Plus this young man is one heck of a good basketball player, being a 3 star point guard coming out of high school.
C.J. is a 6-3 point guard who has a good combination of quickness and strength, who is skilled at pentrating to the basket. Good speed, and he can take physical contact!
Plus, he has experience going up against Derrick Rose, who I think you will find has a high opinion of CJ’s abilities – CJ can play some defense!
Coming out of high school, CJ was recruited to play basketball by several Big 12 schools, i.e. Texas. He was like Oklahoma player of the year his senior season, the young man can play!
The thing that conerns me some, is that he did out of high school accept an offer from Kansas to play basketball! So he does like Kansas, but they are deep at point guard, real deep at guard period.
He did not go to Kansas, instead in 2005 he was drafted by in the MLB darft, and is currently under contract with the Yankees. He later decided to walk-on at Memphis as a basketball player, doing that in the baseball off-season…
This young man has been out of high school for 4 years, and next season would be maturity wise, similar to a 5th year senior. He has gained a lot of maturity through his baseball career, knows the dribble drive offense, and knows what Calipari expects out of his players. He would be a significant asset to the new coaching staff both on the court, and as a leader in practice, off court, etc. Big asset to bring in a new system!
He is 6’3″, good speed and strength, and is a POINT GUARD!!!!
If John Wall was to become a Wildcat, then he would start, and CJ would play behind him.
If we don’t get Wall, which I feel is quite possible, I think CJ would become our starting point guard!!
Logically speaking, he would have been our starting point guard this past season!
I’m starting to think that X and CJ will end up at UK, and quite possibly, CJ ends up being the more critical piece to next season’s team.
Wall is the perfect pg for Coach Cal’s DDM offense. And if he is looking for one and done then who better than Calipari to get him ready for the NBA?
“relevation”? Was there editing in the good old days of journalism as well?
