Proffitt’s high school coach: No decision yet

Although feeling a pressing deadline, former South Laurel star Ty Proffitt has not yet made a college choice.

That’s the word from South Laurel Coach Steve Wright on Sunday, minutes before Kentucky kicked off its football season at Louisville.

In a telephone interview, Wright said that Proffitt was “confused” about his options. Proffitt, who played for Notre Dame as a freshman last season, decided last week to transfer. That decision put him up against the start of the fall semester, meaning he had days to make a choice.

Proffitt met with UK coaches at mid-week. He also visited Morehead State Saturday night, a trip that included watching a cousin made his first start for the Morehead State football team.

Without prompting, Wright noted the need to make a decision within the next few days.

After UK’s football victory over Louisville, Proffitt’s father said his son had narrowed his choices. The elder Proffitt declined to say what schools remained under consideration. He coyly suggested it was safe to assume UK remained on the list.

Proffitt said last week that playing time would loom large in his decision. He also acknowledged that UK coaches mentioned the need to walk on their team. That wasn’t a deal-buster, Proffitt said, because he hoped to be able to receive academic-based financial help.
