UK discourages assumptions on eligibility
UK spokesman DeWayne Peevy discouraged the assumption that listing DeAndre Liggins and Kevin Galloway on the roster means the players have been cleared academically to play this coming season.
That assumption grew rapidly after UK released its prospectus on the 2008-09 season on Tuesday. The prospectus included a roster and player profiles. Liggins and Galloway, who reportedly have not been cleared by the NCAA to play this coming season, were among the profiles.
Peevy noted that the roster is nothing more than a roster. It shouldn’t be assumed a player is eligible because he appears on the roster.
UK does not plan to announce if Liggins and/or Galloway are cleared by the NCAA, Peevy said. That will become apparent only at Big Blue Madness on Oct. 17 if the players participate.
UK would announce if either player or both do not gain NCAA clearance, Peevy said. He likened the privacy issues involved with academic records to federal laws prohibiting the release of medical information.
Peevy would not say if the NCAA had made a judgment on the cases or when such a judgment might happen.
Bottom line: UK fans remain in the dark about the status of two players expected to contribute this coming season.
